While some of the Savannah Supporters of the Performing Arts are actively engaged in actually delivering the best possible theatrical performances and music or dance productions in the greater Savannah area, all of our members are dedicated to developing the Performing Arts.  The main goal of our not-for-profit organization is to support the entire spectrum of performing arts by promoting all the venues that host these presentations in coastal Georgia for local Savannahians and visitors to Low Country Savannah alike.  Feel free to contact any of the supporters of the Performing Arts in Savannah (found on the supporter’s page) to find out more about the robust Theatre District in the Landmark Historic District and beyond in the greater Savannah area.

Romancing Savannah’s Historic District in my Sweet Baby’s Arms

With Valentines Day just a smidgen over a fortnight away now on Thursday, February the 14th plus all the long getaway weekend reservations flowing in as usual, we are reminded of Savannah’s reputation as an important romantic destination for couples young and old. Based on plenty of anecdotal stories we have heard over the years, Georgia’s First City  provides just the right ambiance where couples come to fall in love, plan a honeymoon to, renew their vows, or pop that all important question.  And what more appropriate environment to do so in rather than one of our intimate romantic getaway suites or condominiums in Savannah’s Famed Landmark Historic District.

While coastal Savannah has long been a popular destination spot for honeymooners and romantics from a Romantic Getaway perspective, she is better known as a premier historic city vacation spot strategically located on the Georgia/South Carolina State line. While we are known as a popular romantic getaway destination, or top destination wedding venue, as well as a great place to have a honeymoon, Savannah stands alone against any number of “romantic getaways” destination choices.  As you check out a few pointers on our romantic getaway web page to guarantee an optimum romantic getaway weekend experience, keep this in mind.  Sub_sultan_img
Make it a point to plan your romantic interlude around our many Greater Savannah Area Festival Events or picturesque points of interest for an extra getaway themed event.  As you will quickly see, there are so many diversions to fill the day with and so little time to do them in!  All the more reason to loosely plan your trip and leisurely work your plan!  So as every generation is always fond of listening and dancing to, enjoy the original version of Come on Baby, Let the Good Times Roll as you plan your romantic weekend to Low Country Savannah.

Puppet Performances and Workshop planned for Savannah’s Puppet Gumbo

Th_waving_girl
Savannah’s first lady of puppetry, Angela Beasley,
contacted me recently and told me of her involvement in bringing some more puppet themed entertainment to Savannah in early summer for three day’s worth of live performances.  Additional activities include puppet workshops (learn puppet making techniques and the tips behind making these life size creations come to life), a puppet parade, and a puppet slam.  Savannah based Angela, as many local fans are aware, has been making her Puppet People creations come to life all over the country for well over 30 years now.

Tanglewood
Angela indicated she will be “chairing this puppetry festival in Savannah this Father’s Day weekend June 12th – 15th in conjunction with the Puppeteers of America, Inc Southeast Region.” And that if all goes well, the folks at this organization plan “to get Sesame Street performers to make appearances and do photo ops, as well as have Heather Henson to feature her newest show.”  As the official Puppet Gumbo website states, this SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) sponsored event will open up some of their theatre venues to Angela and other accomplished puppeteers to undertake live performances inside as well as on historic district streets and in some of Savannah’s most popular theatres.  Carrying on the family tradition of Muppet creator Jim Henson, daughter Heather Henson is a probable participant and her renowned live theatre performance is anticipated by her many fans when she appears in Savannah for this June event.  Plan to be in attendance for this important street theatre themed Father’s Day celebration presentation by Savannah’s premier Puppeteer Angela Beasley and SCAD.  And stay tuned to the Savannah Vacation News Channel for other developments as the remaining ingredients are added to Puppet Gumbo.

Savannah’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration, Erin Go Bragh!

Dscn1947
Starting in mid February with our Savannah Irish Festival, the entire Historic Savannah Community celebrates all things Irish culminating in our massive St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on River Street every March 17th. The Savannah Irish Festival held every February 15th and 16th is a two day musical event with vendors from Ireland and America.   Mid March brings the true partying season when over 400,000+ people crowd the streets of our 2.5 square mile landmark historic district to witness and participate in the party atmosphere of this popular festival event.  Although, this celebration is not limited to the Irish, the “kiss me I’m Irish” proclamations prove we native Savannahians truly consider ourselves Irish on this day whether we are in reality true native sons and daughters of this wonderful European culture.

And what would any St. Paddy’s Day Event be without the traditional Parade? Our annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (check out the historic district parade route) is considered another opportunity for family and friends to get together and enjoy a very entertaining Savannah event.Stpaddy05kegrollers
Deemed by many as the second greatest most popular American Saint Patrick’s Day Parade event on the eastern seaboard due to the actual number of celebrants and onlookers, traditional Irish music enhances the festivities with bands and walking groups dancing down the street during the parade.  The Tara Feis Irish Celebration typically held a week before St. Paddy’s Day includes live performances, arts and crafts and food.  The River Street area jams more partying St. Patrick’s Celebrants into this twelve block-long Cobblestone Promenade fronting the Savannah River per block than you are likely to encounter anywhere else on this Irish Day of Days. Whether you are completing your travel plans to include driving in, convoying in mass, or flying down for Savannah’s annual street party, book your lodging reservations now so you can be there or be square.

Would an SOB in Charleston be equivalent to a NOG in Savannah?

Street
In Historic Savannah, North of Gaston Street from the entrance to Forsyth Park all the way down to the Savannah River on highly trafficked River Street is known locally as NOG territory – literal translation “North of Gaston”- which refers to a designated geographic area downtown that residents never ventured very far out of in it’s heyday.  This compact historic district area provided all of their every day living needs. Check out this popular destination on our Savannah Getaways Historic District Map.  In that same vein, Historic Charleston South Carolina’s own preferred tourism destination is known as the South of Broad Street area.  While I have never heard any local resident in this equally Historic City refer to themselves as an SOB, it’s a pretty safe bet this area is considered by tourists and locals alike as The Heart of Charleston’s Historic District" in the same manner that NOG’s consider their own downtown historic district area.

With this in mind, watch a video of this popular tourism destination that our friends in Historic Charleston posted on their Charleston website as they paint a word picture of their own low country historic district, excerpted in part below:

The most famed and exclusive architecture appears in homes on Charleston’s lower peninsula, south of Broad Street. Along East Bay Street, world-renowned Rainbow Row is an excellent example of 18th-century Georgian townhouse construction, featuring a variety of brick and stucco exteriors painted in a spectrum of pastels. Arched doorways, gambrel roofs and quoins on some Rainbow Row exteriors are matched in beauty by paneled wainscoting and architrave moldings inside. Number 95 was once owned by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, signer of the U.S. Constitution. Facing the harbor along East Battery Street is famed Battery Row, a line of towering waterfront mansions that represent the heyday of Charleston’s visual splendor.
