What To Do On Tybee Island

It used to be you would escape downtown Savannah out to Tybee Island’s clean uncluttered stretch of sandy shore by boat, by rail or by car. Today you can make the 20 minute drive from downtown across island bridges through modern island communities where local Savannahians live and play year round. Your final stop, Destination Tybee reveals the same family friendly village-like feel with just the right renewing sense of remove from everyday cares of that bygone era first embodied on coastal Georgia’s northern most beach. Whether you choose to stay by the shipping lane at the mouth of the Savannah River or “Savannah Beach’s” end of the line Atlantic facing beach at the other end of the island, the sparkling Atlantic waters meets your expectations. Check out our Tybee Island Visitor’s Guide for an assortment of attractions.

Tybee Island Light Station

Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years. The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America’s most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. Visitors can now see the lighthouse as your forefathers once knew it.

One reviewer says of the recent play “Love Letters” performed at the Tybee Theater “The play has been performed all over the world — and by hundreds of talented performers — but the new cafe seems like as good a place to see it as any theater on Broadway or in the West End.”
